NaNoWriMo 2012 starts in just over a week and I still have no idea what I am writing for it. I have so many ideas that *might* work as a novel, but I don’t even know where to start in deciding. My main problem is that I am torn between taking a risk or not taking a risk.
By taking a risk, I mean going with one of my more ‘out there’ ideas – straying from my comfort zone and going with something I’d not normally write – fantasy/horror etc. I must admit, this is tempting. NaNo is supposed to be fun and going with a wilder idea would add to that.
However, (isn’t there always an however?) I also want to have something at the end of it. If I’m going to put in the effort of writing 50k in 30 days, I don’t want that work to be wasted. I want the start of a novel I can finish and rewrite and edit into something which might sell. I tend to write character-driven stories with personal tragedies and life-changing events. (Even though I read mainly horror and thrillers – odd.)
It’s quite a dilemma. If I take the risk, who knows? I might discover I like it. I might even be good at it. Who knows? But, I could get stuck after a few thousand words and fail. I’ve experimented a bit with short stories with varying success, but there is a big difference between a short story and a book. I can feel a pro/con list coming on.
